TBM Turkey

The Addiction Training Program of Turkey project which is planned within the framework of the cooperation protocol signed on 3 January 2014 by the Turkish Green Crescent Society and the Ministry of National Education. At the end of this program, it is aimed to provide 8 million students with training on addictions by 400 trained educators and 8 thousand field educators who will be trained by these educators.

The children and young people who continue nursery school, elementary school, middle school and high school education will be informed about cigarettes, alcohol, narcotic drugs and technology addictions within the scope of the Program. Educators’ training will be performed on 17-22 February 2014 within the scope of the pilot application of the program. Pilot education will cover high school level. Pilot trainings which will be made in a large location will continue until the end of June. Spreading works will be started at the beginning the academic year of 2014-2015. Through the project, it is aimed to create conscious and awareness at schools and at national level.

The opening speech of the Addiction Training Program of Turkey was delivered by the President of Turkish Green Crescent Society Prof. Dr. M. Ihsan Karaman. Prof. Karaman stated that they were happy to take such a step with the Ministry of National Education for heading young people towards a healthy life free of addictions. Karaman addressed the educators who attended the program and said “Thanks to the trainings you will be receiving here, you will be contributing to the next generations to live a healthier life. If you, educators, were not there, this training would mean nothing, and the project would fail from the beginning”.

General Manager of Lifetime Learning of the Ministry of National Education Assoc. Prof. Mustafa Kemal Bicerli underlined the Turkey will become a country which still protects its young population in 2040s and said “This is a great opportunity, it will turn into threat if not utilized. If you don’t take actions against addictions through educations, you will encounter very severe problems”. Having stated that the Turkish Green Crescent Society undertook an important duty in this regard, Bicerli gave the message that the MNE and Turkish Green Crescent Society were together for a healthy young generation. Provincial Director of National Education Dr. Muammer Yıldız said “As the Provincial Directorate of National Education, we always wish to be beside Turkish Green Crescent Society, the honour of the country, and we will be together with you, our valuable teachers for one week. Thank you for your participation”.

General Manager of the Turkish Green Crescent Society Savas Yilmaz presented Addiction Training Program of Turkey. Member of Science Committee of Turkish Green Crescent Society Omer Mirac Yaman explained the final state of addictions in Turkey.

Training Program educators from 36 districts will be given trainings within the framework of the pilot application by the training staff which consists of field specialized persons such as Narcotic Specialist Commissioner / Specialist Psychological Consultant in Preventing Substance Use Ugur Evcin, Instructor at the Department of Psychiatry of Istanbul Faculty of Medicine Prof. Dr. Ilhan Yargıc, ‎Education Coordinator-Family Therapist Gülsevin Sen, General Coordinator of Psychology Organizations and Trainings Centre Mehmet Dinc. Educators will apply educative trainings to the PDR teachers of the schools within their areas of duty, and these trained teachers will be expected to study the education materials which are prepared with the students at their schools.

Phases of the pilot application

Within the scope of the pilot applications of Addiction Training Program of Turkey, education programs will be improved, pilot application will be implemented, field educators will be provided with educators’ training and school application, measurement and assessment works will be performed. Education programs will cover interactive methods which promote learning by living, 40-minute presentations, students’ handbooks, educators’ books and distance education based interactive education notes. The pilot application of the project which will be implemented in a wide location will start with the training which will be applied on 45 PDR teachers between 17 -22 February 2014 and continue until the end of June. Guidance counsellors of the schools will be given 1 day educative training by the educators in their field of duty. These trainings will be applied for the use of the presentation skills and education materials developed. And then, every guidance counsellor will be expected to study this content with his own students at the school he is employed at and this process will be monitored. A system will be designed in conformity with the needs of the project processes. Through this system, measurement and assessment studies and reporting will be made. The data obtained will be shared with the relevant institutions.
